Chinchipe River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Chinchipe River is a cool river that flows right along the border between two countries: Ecuador and Peru. It starts its journey high up in the mountains of Ecuador, specifically in the Zamora-Chinchipe Province and inside the beautiful Podocarpus National Park. From there, it travels through different parts of Peru, like the Piura Region and the Cajamarca Region in the San Ignacio Province. Finally, the Chinchipe River joins a much bigger river called the Maranon River.

This river and all the land around it, called its basin, cover a huge area. It's about 9,686.96 square kilometers! That's a lot of space. The Chinchipe River actually begins when two smaller rivers, the Palanda and Numbala rivers, meet up in Ecuador. When the river crosses the border into Peru, its name sometimes changes. People in both Ecuador and Peru might also call it Canananbo, Chuquimayo, or Mayo.

A very old and important group of people, known as the Mayo-Chinchipe culture, lived and developed right in this river basin. They were one of the earliest cultures in the Andes mountains.

Where the River Gets Its Water

The Chinchipe River gets its water from many smaller rivers that flow into it. These are called tributaries. Here are some of the main ones:

  • In the Zamora Chinchipe province of Ecuador:
    • Palanda River
    • Numbala River
    • Isimanchi River
    • Canchis River
  • In the Cajamarca department of Peru:
    • Chirinos River
    • Tabaconas River
