The Chinese white pear is a type of pear grown mostly in North China. It is also known as the ya pear or pearple. Its scientific name is Pyrus × bretschneideri. This pear is a hybrid species, meaning it's a mix of two different types of pears. People grow it for its tasty fruit.

Scientists have studied the genes of the Chinese white pear. They found it is related to the Siberian pear (Pyrus ussuriensis). Some also think it could be a special kind of Chinese pear (Pyrus pyrifolia).

What is a Nashi Pear?

The Chinese white pear is sometimes called a nashi pear. Other pears from eastern Asia, like P. pyrifolia and P. ussuriensis, are also called nashi pears.

How Chinese White Pears Look and Taste

Chinese white pears are very juicy. They are white to light yellow inside. Unlike the round nashi pears, Chinese white pears look more like European pears (Pyrus communis). They are narrower near the stem.

One popular type is called "Ya Li" (Chinese: 鸭梨; pinyin: yālí). This name means "duck pear" because its shape looks a bit like a duck. Ya Li pears are grown a lot in China. They are also sent to many other countries.

Ya pears taste a bit like a mild Bosc pear. But they are more crisp and have more water. They also have less sugar than some other pears.

New Kinds of Pears

Scientists and farmers work together to create new types of pears. They have mixed the Chinese white pear (P. ×bretschneideri) with the Chinese pear (P. pyrifolia). These new pears are still considered part of the P. ×bretschneideri group.

One example is a pear called 'PremP109', or 'Prem 109'. This pear is sold under the name Papple. It is a mix that combines good qualities from both parent pears.
