Volcán Chingo is a cool stratovolcano located right on the border between Guatemala and El Salvador. It's the highest point along this border, standing tall at 1,775 meters (5,823 feet). This makes it one of the tallest volcanoes in southeastern Guatemala.

Even though it's an active volcano, there are no records of it ever erupting in history. Many people live near Volcán Chingo, with about 867,678 people living within 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) of it.

What is Volcán Chingo Like?

This volcano has a cool, almost perfect cone shape. At its very top, there's a small, oval-shaped crater. This crater has a break on its western side.

You can also find old lava flows around the volcano. These flows came from cracks on its sides. They are mostly found to the west and north of the main volcano.

Rocks and Nearby Hills

The rocks that make up Volcán Chingo are mostly Andesite and Basalt. These are common types of volcanic rock.

Near the volcano, you'll see a light brown hill called Cerro Laguneta. It sits below the volcano on the right side.

Across the border in El Salvador, there's another younger cone called Cerro la Olla. It's located on the south side of Volcán Chingo. To the north, you'll find Volcan las Viboras. This is a cinder cone that sits on top of a basalt shield. It's one of several smaller cones in the area.

Amazing Plants and Coffee

Volcán Chingo is home to some special plants. One rare flower, called Sobralia amabilis, was found near the top of the volcano. This beautiful orchid was the only one ever recorded in that part of Guatemala. Scientists think there might be more of these flowers hiding in the area.

Coffee from the Volcano

The valley below Volcán Chingo has very rich soil. This makes it a perfect place to grow coffee beans! Farmers in the Jutiapa Region of Guatemala grow coffee at the base of the volcano. They even named their coffee "Volcán Chingo." They grow the coffee beans in the shade under Inga edulis trees.
