Chiquimula is an important city in Guatemala. It is the main city of the Chiquimula area, which is like a state or province. It is also the center for the surrounding municipality, which is a local government area.
Chiquimula is about 174 kilometers (108 miles) away from Guatemala City, the capital of Guatemala. People in Guatemala often call Chiquimula "La perla del oriente," which means "the pearl of the east."

History of Chiquimula
Becoming a Hero City
In 1851, a big battle happened near Chiquimula. It was called the Battle of La Arada. Guatemala's army won against the armies from El Salvador and Honduras. Because of this important victory, Chiquimula was given the special name "Ciudad Procer." This means "Hero City."

Chiquimula is the city with the most people in eastern Guatemala. In 2002, about 37,602 people lived there. By 2018, the number of people had grown a lot. The population increased to 111,505 people.

Football fun
Chiquimula has a football (soccer) team called Sacachispas. They play in the Liga Nacional de Guatemala, which is the top football league in Guatemala. Their home stadium is called Estadio Las Victorias.
The Sacachispas team has played in the highest league before. Their best season was in 1995–1996, when they finished as runners-up. Since 2000, they have been playing in the Primera División de Ascenso, which is the second division.
