Where Does the Chiskal River Flow?
The Chiskal River generally flows towards the south-east. It runs between two other rivers: the Petite rivière au Bouleau to its west and the main Bouleau River to its east.
The River's Beginning
The Chiskal River starts from a lake that doesn't have a specific name. This lake is about 0.6 km (0.37 mi) long and sits high up at 681 m (2,234 ft) above sea level. It's located in the wild Rivière-Nipissis territory.
This starting lake gets its water from a few smaller streams. These include the Chasse stream, the Lièvre stream, and the Castor stream. The river then flows out of a narrow bay at the south-east end of this lake.
How Long is the Chiskal River?
From its starting lake, the Chiskal River flows for about 31.3 km (19.4 mi). During its journey, the river drops 395 m (1,296 ft) in height.
The river's path can be split into two main parts:
The Upper Part of the River
The first part of the Chiskal River is about 18.2 km (11.3 mi) long.
- For about 10.8 km (6.7 mi), it flows mostly south in a straight line. It passes through three small lakes. Then, it curves towards the south-east. Here, it meets the Zéphirin stream (from the east) and Chisholm Creek (from the north).
- For the next 7.4 km (4.6 mi), the river continues south. It flows through a valley that gets deeper and deeper. Towards the end of this section, it curves south-east. It then receives water from a group of lakes coming from the north-west.
The Lower Part of the River
The second part of the Chiskal River is about 13.1 km (8.1 mi) long.
- For about 8.3 km (5.2 mi), it flows east. It runs along the bottom of a long mountain cliff on its south side. It then makes a sharp turn towards the south-east.
- For the last 4.8 km (3.0 mi), the river flows south-east through a wider valley. It forms several loops and collects water from the rivière à Dupuis, which comes from the south-west.
Where Does the Chiskal River End?
The Chiskal River flows into the Bouleau River. It joins the Bouleau River on its west bank, where the Bouleau River makes a bend.
This meeting point is located:
- About 144 km (89 mi) south-west of the village of Havre-Saint-Pierre.
- About 65 km (40 mi) west of the village of Rivière-au-Tonnerre.
- About 71.4 km (44.4 mi) north-east of downtown Sept-Îles.
After the Chiskal River joins the Bouleau River, the water continues to flow. The Bouleau River then travels about 39.1 km (24.3 mi) south until it reaches the northern shore of the estuary of Saint Lawrence.
