The River's Journey
The Dupuis River generally flows towards the southeast. It runs between two other rivers. These are the Petite rivière au Bouleau to its west and the Bouleau River to its east.
Where the River Starts
The Dupuis River begins in an unidentified lake. This lake is about 0.9 kilometers (0.56 miles) long. It sits at an altitude of 532 meters (1,745 feet) above sea level. This starting point is in the unorganized territory of Rivière-Nipissis.
The lake's outlet is at the end of a bay on its southeast side. This spot is:
- 4.3 kilometers (2.7 miles) southwest of a bend in the Chiskal River.
- 20.4 kilometers (12.7 miles) southeast of a bay in Nipisso Lake.
- 68.1 kilometers (42.3 miles) northeast of downtown Sept-Îles.
How the River Flows
From its source lake, the Dupuis River flows for about 18.2 kilometers (11.3 miles). During its journey, the river drops 279 meters (915 feet) in elevation.
Here's how the river flows:
- It travels 3.1 kilometers (1.9 miles) south. Along this part, it crosses a lake that is 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) long. This lake is at an altitude of 530 meters (1,740 feet). The river then reaches a bend where a stream joins it from the west.
- Next, it flows 1.3 kilometers (0.81 miles) northeast. It crosses another unidentified lake, which is 0.94 kilometers (0.58 miles) long. This lake is at an altitude of 492 meters (1,614 feet).
- Finally, it goes 13.8 kilometers (8.6 miles) northeast in a mostly straight line. Along this stretch, it collects water from several places. These include water from three lakes to the north, two lakes to the southwest, and one lake to the northwest. It also flows down a mountain.
Where the River Ends
The Dupuis River joins the Chiskal River at a bend on its west bank. This meeting point is located:
- 1.0 kilometer (0.62 miles) west of the Bouleau River.
- 16.6 kilometers (10.3 miles) northeast of the Matamec River.
- 66.6 kilometers (41.4 miles) west of the village of Rivière-au-Tonnerre.
- 71.6 kilometers (44.5 miles) northeast of downtown Sept-Îles.
After joining the Dupuis River, the current flows down the Chiskal River for 2.8 kilometers (1.7 miles). Then, it continues down the Bouleau River for 39.1 kilometers (24.3 miles) to the south. Eventually, it reaches the north shore of the estuary of Saint Lawrence.
How the River Got Its Name
