The Chocón Machacas River is an important river in eastern Guatemala. It flows for about 53 kilometers (33 miles). This river is very special because it is a home for the endangered Caribbean manatee.
About the Chocón Machacas River
The Chocón Machacas River starts high up in the mountains. Its sources are on the eastern side of the Sierra de Santa Cruz. This mountain range is located in Guatemala.
Where the River Flows
From its start, the river flows generally towards the west-south-west. It then empties into a large body of water called the Golfete Dulce. The Golfete Dulce is a freshwater lagoon. It connects to the larger Gulf of Honduras.
Home to Manatees
The Chocón Machacas River and the Golfete Dulce area are very important. They form one of the last places where the Caribbean manatee can live safely. Manatees are large, gentle sea mammals. They are an endangered species, meaning their numbers are very low. Protecting this river helps protect these amazing animals.
