Choi Ji-woo's Acting Journey
Starting Out: 1994–1998
Choi Mi-hyang began her acting career after winning a talent audition in 1994. Her first TV show was War and Love in 1995. After this, she started using the stage name Choi Ji-woo.
She got her first big movie role in the 1996 film The Gate of Destiny. In the years that followed, Choi appeared in both TV shows and movies. Some of her early films include The Hole and the romantic comedy First Kiss. She became more popular through her TV roles, often playing pure and innocent characters. Two notable shows were Truth and Beautiful Days.
Becoming a Star: The Korean Wave
In 2002, Choi Ji-woo starred in Winter Sonata with Bae Yong-joon. This show became a huge success across Asia and helped start the "Korean Wave". The Korean Wave is when South Korean pop culture, like TV shows and music, becomes very popular around the world.
Because of Winter Sonata, Choi Ji-woo became famous all over Asia, especially in Japan. Fans in Japan even gave her the nickname Ji-woo Hime, which means "Princess Ji-woo". She later voiced her character in the Winter Sonata Anime. She remains a very popular star in Japan.
After the success of her 2003 drama Stairway to Heaven, Choi tried more movies. Her films Everybody Has Secrets and Now and Forever were popular in Japan, even if they didn't do as well in South Korea.
Choi also acted in dramas in other countries. She was in the Chinese drama 101st Proposal and the Japanese drama RONDO. In 2007, she returned to Korean TV in Air City, where she played a manager at Incheon International Airport.
New Challenges: 2009–2012
In 2009, Choi starred in Star's Lover. She played a famous actress who falls in love with an ordinary man. For this role, she earned a very high salary for a Korean actress at the time.
That same year, she started her own management company called C,JW Company. She also joined the cast of the film Actresses, which was a unique movie where the actors played themselves.
In 2011, Choi wanted to try new types of roles. She starred in the romantic comedy Can't Lose, playing a lawyer going through a divorce. She said she wanted to be known as a "romantic comedy queen" instead of just a "melodrama queen." She also showed her fun side on the reality show 2 Days & 1 Night.
In 2012, Choi was in the Chinese drama City Lovers. She also hosted a food show called Choi Ji-woo's Delicious Korea. On this show, she traveled around South Korea to promote Korean food and culture.
Her next big role was in the 2013 drama The Suspicious Housekeeper. She played a mysterious housekeeper who helps a family. Choi chose this role because the character was very different from her usual roles.
Recent Work: 2014–Present
In 2014, Choi Ji-woo joined the talent agency YG Entertainment. She then reunited with her Stairway to Heaven co-star Kwon Sang-woo in the drama Temptation.
In 2015, she joined the travel reality show Grandpas Over Flowers. On the show, she traveled through Greece with older actors. This was followed by the TV series Twenty Again, where she played a 38-year-old housewife who goes to college with her son. Her performance in this show was highly praised.
In 2016, Choi returned to movies with the romance film Like for Likes. She also starred in the legal drama Woman with a Suitcase.
In 2017, she was cast in the family drama The Most Beautiful Goodbye. In 2019, she made a special appearance in the popular drama Crash Landing on You.
Personal Life
Choi Ji-woo studied aerobic dance in college. She later started studying Theater and Film at Hanyang University but had to leave because of her busy acting schedule.
Choi married her husband, who is not a celebrity, on March 29, 2018. It was a private wedding, and she announced it to her fans just hours before. She welcomed her first child, a daughter, on May 16, 2020.
