Cholet Island is a small piece of land surrounded by water, located near the icy continent of Antarctica. It is part of a group of islands called the Wilhelm Archipelago. This island is very small and sits just north of a narrow strip of land that sticks out from Booth Island.

Discovering Cholet Island

Cholet Island was found by a group of explorers from France. They were on an adventure called the French Antarctic Expedition, 1903–05. This expedition was led by a famous French explorer named Jean-Baptiste Charcot.

Who was Ernest Cholet?

Jean-Baptiste Charcot decided to name this island after someone important to his journey. He named it for Ernest Cholet. Ernest Cholet was the skipper, or captain, of the expedition's ship, the Français. Later, he also captained another famous ship called the Pourquoi-Pas?. Naming the island after him was a way to honor his important role in the expedition.

Where is Cholet Island?

Cholet Island is located in the Wilhelm Archipelago, which is off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. This area is known for its many islands and cold, icy waters. Because it's in Antarctica, the island is uninhabited, meaning no people live there. The entire region is governed by the Antarctic Treaty System, which promotes scientific research and peaceful activities.
