Chongon Colonche Range facts for kids
The Chongon Colonche Range (also called the Colonche Range) is a mountain range located on the central Pacific coast of Ecuador. It stretches from the Manabí Province in the northwest and curves southeast towards the city of Guayaquil. This mountain range reaches heights of over 800 meters (about 2,600 feet) above sea level. It is one of the only major mountain ranges in Ecuador found west of the much larger Andes mountains.
What is the Chongon Colonche Range?
Much of the Chongon Colonche Range is covered in native tropical wet forests, also known as rainforests. These forests are very important, but large areas have been cleared over time for farming. The parts of the forest that remain are home to a huge variety of plants and animals. This is called high biodiversity.
Why is this area special?
A protected area in the southeastern part of the range is recognized as an "Important Bird Area" by an organization called BirdLife International. This means it's a very important place for many different kinds of birds, some of which might be rare or endangered. Protecting this area helps keep these birds safe.
