Where the River Starts
The Choqueyapu River begins high up in the mountains. Its source is a spring called Achachi Qala. This name comes from the Aymara language. It means "border stone" or "old stone." The spring is located in the Cordillera Real mountain range. It's very close to a mountain called Chacaltaya. The river starts at a high elevation of 5,395 meters (about 17,700 feet).
The River's Journey
From its mountain source, the Choqueyapu River flows through the city of La Paz. It travels from the north side of the city to the south. After leaving La Paz, the river changes direction. It turns towards the east. At this point, it is often known as the La Paz River. The river flows south of Illimani mountain. It also passes north of the Kimsa Cruz mountain range.
Joining Other Rivers
The Choqueyapu River eventually meets another river called the Cotacajes River. When these two rivers join, they form the beginning of the Beni River. In this area, the Beni River is sometimes called Alto Beni, which means "high Beni."
River Branches
The Choqueyapu River has smaller streams that flow into it. These are called tributaries. One of its tributaries is the Amutara River. Other tributaries include Urqu Jawira and Irpawi.
Keeping the River Clean
Like many rivers that flow through big cities, the Choqueyapu River faces challenges. It has some pollution from city water. People are working to improve the river's health. They want to make sure it is cleaner for everyone.
