Chris Childs (born November 20, 1967) is an American former professional basketball player. He mostly played as a guard during his career.
Chris Childs' Early Basketball Journey
Chris Childs played high school basketball at Foothill High School. He then became a star player at Boise State University in the late 1980s. In 1989, Childs was named the Big Sky Conference Player of the Year. This was a big achievement for him in college.
Even with his success in college, Chris Childs was not chosen in the 1989 NBA Draft. So, he started his professional career in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA). This was a league where players could show off their skills. He played for three different teams in his first three seasons. Later, he found a good spot with the Quad City Thunder. With the Thunder, Childs helped his team win a league title in 1994. He also won the CBA MVP award that year. He averaged 17.9 points and 7.6 assists per game.
Chris Childs' NBA Career Highlights
Chris Childs' great performance in the CBA helped him get into the NBA. He signed with the New Jersey Nets before the 1994–95 NBA season began. He played his first two NBA seasons with the Nets. In the 1995–96 season, he scored his highest NBA career average of 12.8 points per game.
Many people remember Childs best for his five years (1996–2001) with the New York Knicks. The Knicks relied on his strong defense and his ability to make three-point shots. He was a key player during their yearly trips to the NBA playoffs. During this time, Childs helped the New York Knicks win the NBA Eastern Conference championship in 1999.
In the 1996–97 season, he led the team in assists, with 6.1 per game, as a starter. For the next four years, he was a valuable player coming off the bench. Chris Childs was well-known in the New York media. He was also part of the NBA All-Interview Team in 1998–99. In 2000, he won the "Good Guy Award" from the New York Press Photographers Association. This was for his work with different charities and youth basketball programs.
On April 2, 2000, during a game against the Los Angeles Lakers, Chris Childs had an on-court incident with Kobe Bryant. Both players were removed from the game. The Knicks lost that game 106–82.
In February 2001, Childs was traded to the Toronto Raptors. He played for the Raptors for about a season and a half. After that, he rejoined the Nets in 2002. Chris Childs retired from professional basketball after the 2002–03 season.
