Chris Getzlaf's Football Career

Starting with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Chris Getzlaf was picked by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the fifth round of the 2007 CFL Draft. He was the 33rd player chosen overall. He played in the first two games of the season. After that, he spent the rest of the season on the practice teams for two different clubs. A practice roster is where players train with the team but don't usually play in games.

Playing for the Saskatchewan Roughriders (First Time)

On August 19, 2007, Chris Getzlaf was traded to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. This trade also involved another player, Corey Holmes. Even though Chris was on the practice roster, he was part of the Roughriders team that won the 2007 Grey Cup. This meant both he and his brother, Ryan, became champions in their sports in 2007.

Chris started the 2008 season on the practice roster again. However, many receivers on the team got injured. This gave Chris a chance to play, and he made his debut for the Roughriders on October 3, 2008. In this game, he made his first professional catch and scored his first touchdown. He finished that game with five catches for 47 yards and one touchdown. He played in the last five games of the season, catching 15 passes for 247 yards and two touchdowns.

In the 2009 season, Chris began as a backup receiver. When another player, Andy Fantuz, got injured, Chris became a starter. In one game, he had five catches for 101 yards and two touchdowns. One of his touchdowns was a 65-yard play that helped the Roughriders win a close game. This was his first game with over 100 receiving yards. Chris became a regular starter, playing in 14 games that season. He led his team with six touchdown catches. Many of his career touchdowns came against the Calgary Stampeders.

In the playoffs that year, Chris helped the Roughriders win the West Final. He had three catches and a touchdown in that game. On January 15, 2010, Chris signed a new contract to stay with the Roughriders. He signed another contract extension on June 20, 2012. In the 101st Grey Cup in 2013, Chris was named the Most Valuable Canadian player. He signed another contract on December 5, 2013, to stay with the Roughriders until the end of the 2015 season. After the 2015 season, his contract ended, and he became a free agent. A free agent is a player who is not under contract with any team and can sign with any team they choose.

Time with the Edmonton Eskimos

On February 25, 2016, Chris Getzlaf signed with the Edmonton Eskimos. He played for the Eskimos for about a year and a half. The team released him on September 26, 2017.

Back with the Saskatchewan Roughriders (Second Time)

On October 16, 2017, Chris Getzlaf rejoined the Roughriders' practice roster. He was moved to the main team on November 12. Chris Getzlaf officially announced his retirement from professional football on January 4, 2018.
