Christopher A. Harper is an important leader in the Anglican Church of Canada. He holds a special role as the National Indigenous Anglican Archbishop. Chris Harper is a significant figure because he is the first priest from Treaty 6 territory to become a bishop. A bishop is a high-ranking leader in the Anglican Church. Treaty 6 is an agreement between the Canadian Crown and various First Nations in parts of Saskatchewan and Alberta.
Early Life and Calling
Chris Harper was born in Paradise Hill, Saskatchewan. He spent a lot of his younger life on the Onion Lake Cree Nation. This is a First Nation community in Saskatchewan.
Before he became a priest, Chris Harper worked as an Emergency medical technician. This means he helped people in medical emergencies. Later, he felt a "call to ordination." This means he decided to become a priest and serve the church.
His Journey in the Church
After becoming a priest, Chris Harper worked in different parts of Canada. He served in the Anglican areas known as the Diocese of Saskatchewan, the Diocese of Algoma, and the Diocese of Toronto. These are like different regions or districts within the church.
In December 2022, it was announced that Chris Harper would take over from Mark MacDonald. He became the new National Indigenous Anglican Archbishop. This role is very important for supporting and leading Indigenous ministries within the Anglican Church.
