Christ's Chapel of God's Gift is a historic church located in Dulwich, a part of London. It is found within the larger College of God's Gift complex.
History of Christ's Chapel
This special chapel was officially opened in 1616. It was consecrated by George Abbot, who was the Archbishop of Canterbury at the time. The chapel was meant to be the heart of a new institution.
This institution was Edward Alleyn's College of God's Gift. It was a school and charity that started a few years later in 1619. The chapel played a central role in the daily life of the college.
The Chapel's Organ
Inside the chapel, you can find a very old organ. This organ was built in 1759. It is the oldest organ still existing that was made by a famous organ builder named George England.
Location and Parish
Christ's Chapel is one of two churches in the area known as the Parish of Dulwich. The full name of the parish is Parish of St Barnabas with Christ's Chapel. The other church in this parish is St Barnabas' Church, Dulwich.
