Christ's Chapel of God's Gift is a historic church located in Dulwich, a part of London. It is found within the larger complex of the College of God's Gift. This chapel has been an important part of the Dulwich community for centuries.
A Chapel's Beginning
The chapel was officially opened in 1616. This special ceremony was led by George Abbot. He was the Archbishop of Canterbury at that time. The chapel was meant to be the heart of Edward Alleyn's new school. This school, called the College of God's Gift, was set up in 1619.
The chapel is one of two churches in the area of Dulwich. Together, they form the Parish of St Barnabas with Christ's Chapel. The other church is St Barnabas' Church, Dulwich.
The Oldest Organ
Inside Christ's Chapel, you can find a very old organ. It was built in 1759 by a famous organ maker named George England. This organ is special because it is the oldest one built by him that is still around today. It has been making music for over 260 years!
