Christ Church is a beautiful old church located in Lloyd Street North, Moss Side, Manchester, England. It is a church of the Church of England, which is the main Christian church in England. The church was built between 1899 and 1904. A famous architect named W. Cecil Hardisty designed it.
This church is very special because it was given a "Grade II* listed building" status on April 24, 1987. This means it's an important historic building that needs to be protected. A Grade II* listing is the second highest level of protection for buildings in England.
Church Design and Style
Christ Church is built using red bricks. Its design follows a style called "Arts and Crafts Perpendicular". This style combines the artistic ideas of the Arts and Crafts movement with the traditional "Perpendicular" style of English church architecture.
Architectural Features
A well-known expert on buildings, Nikolaus Pevsner, thought this church was Hardisty's best work in Manchester. The most detailed decorations are found on the front of the church, which faces west. Here, you can see a small bell tower, called a bellcote, that sits in a unique way on one side of the roof's triangular part, known as the gable.
Inside the Church
Over the years, many of the original items inside the church, like furniture and decorations, have been changed or removed. However, some new pieces have been brought in from other churches that were taken down. For example, the reredos, which is a decorated screen behind the altar, came from St Edward's church in Holbeck, Leeds.
