What Makes Christ Church Special?
Its Unique Design and Style
Christ Church is built using red bricks. Its design is a mix of two styles: "Arts and Crafts" and "Perpendicular". The Arts and Crafts style focuses on traditional craftsmanship and simple forms. The Perpendicular style is a type of English Gothic architecture. It is known for its tall, narrow windows and strong vertical lines.
The architect, W. Cecil Hardisty, did a great job designing this church. Some experts, like Nikolaus Pevsner, thought it was his best work in Manchester. The most decorated part of the church is its front, called the west front. Here, you can see a small tower for bells, called a bellcote. It sits in a fun and unusual way on one side of the roof.
Inside the Church
Over the years, many of the original things inside Christ Church have changed. However, some new pieces have been added from other churches that were taken down. For example, the reredos (which is a decorated screen behind the altar) came from a church called St Edward in Holbeck, Leeds. This shows how parts of history can be moved and reused in new places.
