School History
Christchurch Boys' High School opened on May 18, 1881. Its main purpose was to get students ready for Canterbury College, which is now the University of Canterbury. At first, the school was located right next to the college in the city centre.
As both the school and the university grew, CBHS needed more space. In 1926, it moved to its current location on Straven Road. This land used to be a farm owned by the Deans family, who were early settlers in Canterbury. Some of the old farm buildings are still on the school grounds today. The school's main building is considered a special historic place and is protected by Heritage New Zealand.
The school has a special tradition for ANZAC Day. All new students must attend a service to remember the former students who fought in World War I and World War II. On this day, a special third verse of the school song, 'Altiora Peto', is sung.
CBHS often works with its sister school, Christchurch Girls' High School, for drama and music shows.
The College Match: A Rugby Tradition
Every year, CBHS plays a big rugby union game against its rival, Christ's College. This game is called "The College Match" and is a major event for both schools.
The first match was played in 1892. Over the years, CBHS has won the most games. The school holds the record for the longest winning streak, from 2001 to 2016.
