Christian Fernández Salas, born on October 15, 1985, is a Spanish former professional football player. He mostly played as a left-back defender.

During his long 20-year career, he played 276 games and scored 22 goals in Spain's Segunda División (Second Division). He spent six years playing for Real Oviedo. He also played 94 games in La Liga (Spain's top league) for Racing de Santander and UD Almería. He even played for a short time in the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States with D.C. United.

Playing for Clubs

Starting at Racing de Santander

Christian Fernández was born in Santander, Spain. He grew up playing football in the youth academy of his hometown club, Racing de Santander. He played his first game for the main team on January 7, 2007. This was a La Liga match where Racing lost 2–0 to Levante UD.

Later that season, he played in ten more La Liga games. He scored his first goal in a thrilling 5–4 home win against Athletic Bilbao.

Loan to Las Palmas

In the middle of the 2007–08 season, Fernández was loaned to UD Las Palmas. This team was struggling in the Segunda División. He and his teammate Samuel San José helped the team stay in the division. Fernández scored four goals during his time there.

Success at Racing

The 2009–10 season was a big one for Fernández. He played in 29 league matches for Racing and scored two goals. One of his goals helped Racing win 3–1 against CA Osasuna on March 21, 2010. This win helped his team avoid being moved down to a lower league.

He also helped his team reach the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey (a major Spanish cup competition). He scored a goal in a 3–2 away victory over AD Alcorcón.

Moving to Almería and D.C. United

After another player, Domingo Cisma, joined Racing, Fernández played less often. However, he still played 38 games in his last two seasons with Racing. He scored four goals during this time, playing as either a left-back or a center-back.

In 2012, Racing de Santander was moved down to a lower league. On July 9, 2012, Fernández signed a two-year contract with UD Almería, another team in the second division. He was a key player in Almería's return to La Liga.

On December 29, 2013, Fernández left Almería. On February 7, 2014, when he was 28 years old, he moved to the United States. He signed with D.C. United in the Major League Soccer.

Return to Spain and Real Oviedo

Fernández returned to Spain on July 6, 2014. He rejoined his former club, UD Las Palmas, for three years. On August 6, 2015, he was loaned to SD Huesca, another team in the second division, for one year.

On July 7, 2016, Fernández signed a two-year deal with Real Oviedo in the second tier. He played a lot of games for Oviedo, never playing fewer than 31 matches in his first five seasons. However, in the 2021–22 season, he only played four games.

Later Career and Retirement

After leaving Real Oviedo, Fernández moved to lower leagues. He played for CF Fuenlabrada and Gimnástica de Torrelavega. He retired from playing football in May 2023, at the age of 37. Right after retiring, he was appointed as the general manager and youth system coordinator at Gimnástica de Torrelavega.

Personal Life

Before the 2018–19 football season, Christian Fernández announced something special. He decided to wear a shirt with the name Bolaño on it. This was to honor his father's second last name.
