Early Life and Education

Christian Friedrich von Otto was born on October 26, 1758, in a town called Dettingen unter Teck. His father was a Protestant minister. Young Christian went to high school in Stuttgart.

After high school, he studied law at the University of Tübingen. He learned from a professor named Carl Christopher Hofacker. Later, he moved to the University of Strasbourg to study more about French law. This helped him prepare for his final law paper. In 1780, he earned his doctorate degree and began working as a lawyer.

Starting His Career

In 1786, Christian Friedrich von Otto became a secretary for Charles Eugene, Duke of Württemberg. This was an important first step in his government career. By 1792, he was appointed as a Minister and a court assessor. This meant he had a high position in the government and helped make decisions in the court.

Later, he played a role in establishing the Kingdom of Württemberg. After 1806, he took charge of the Police Department in Upper Württemberg. He also led the Regional Economics College, which dealt with the economy of the region.

Serving During the Napoleonic Wars

During the Napoleonic Wars, Christian Friedrich von Otto took on even more responsibilities. He became the Commissioner-General for supplying foreign troops. This meant he was in charge of managing money and supplies for soldiers. He also oversaw the hospital system, making sure injured soldiers received care.

In 1811, he became the Head of the Local Government. He also joined the newly formed Württemberg State Council, which was a key group that advised the ruler. In 1814, he received a very important award called the Grand Cross of Civil Merit Württemberg. This award was connected to German nobility, showing his high status.

In 1815, he managed the financial payments for the Württemberg army. He also helped the army of the Grand Duchy of Hesse get paid by the French Treasury. In 1818, he received another significant award, the Order of the Crown (Württemberg).

Important Government Roles

Christian Friedrich von Otto held several top government positions:

  • From November 8, 1816, to November 10, 1817, he served as the Minister of Finance for Württemberg. This meant he was in charge of the country's money.
  • From November 10, 1817, to July 29, 1821, he was the Interior Minister. In this role, he managed internal affairs, like public safety and administration.
  • From July 29, 1821, to November 15, 1831, he became the President of the Privy Council. This was a very powerful position, similar to a prime minister. He took over from Hans Otto von der Lühe. Baron Eugen von Maucler later took his place.

Later Life

Christian Friedrich von Otto passed away in Stuttgart on September 8, 1836.
