About Christian Lindberg

Early Life and Musical Journey

Christian Lindberg was born in Danderyd, Sweden. When he was younger, he first learned to play the trumpet. At age 16, he started playing the trombone. He borrowed a trombone to join his friends' Dixieland jazz band. He was inspired by the music of a famous trombonist named Jack Teagarden.

He studied music at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. By the time he was 18, he was playing professionally in the Royal Swedish Opera Orchestra. But at 20, he decided to become a full-time solo musician. This meant he would perform by himself, not as part of an orchestra. He continued his studies with well-known trombone players like John Iveson, Ralph Sauer, and Roger Bobo.

Becoming a Professional Musician

In 1981, Lindberg won an important music competition called the Nordic Soloists' Biennale. His first big concert performance was in 1984. He played a special piece called the Trombone Concerto by Henri Tomasi. In the same year, he signed a deal to record three albums with BIS Records. His very first solo album was called "The Virtuoso Trombone."

Christian Lindberg has recorded more than 60 albums. He has worked with many other musicians and composers. One of his important partners in Sweden was the composer Jan Sandström.

Playing New Music

Lindberg is famous for playing contemporary music. This means music written in modern times. He has also helped to make more music available for the trombone. He once said that over 80 new pieces were written just for him to play. On September 7, 2017, he performed his 100th premiere of a trombone concerto. A concerto is a piece of music for a solo instrument and an orchestra.

Some of the famous pieces he has played include Sandström's Motorbike Concerto. He also performed Sequenza V by Luciano Berio and The Ballad of Kit Bones by Fredrik Högberg.

Lindberg as a Composer

Christian Lindberg also started writing his own music in the 1990s. His friend, composer Jan Sandström, encouraged him. His first piece to be performed was Arabenne for trombone and strings. This was recorded in 1997. He has also written other works like Mandrake in the Corner and Chick 'a' bone Checkout.

His Special Trombone Design

Lindberg even created his own special design for a part of the trombone called the F attachment valve rotor. He got a patent for this design in 1999. He worked with a company called C.G. Conn to make it. This new valve helps the trombone sound more open and clear. Conn now makes trombones with this special "CL2000" valve.

Leading Orchestras as a Conductor

In 2000, Christian Lindberg started conducting orchestras. This means he leads the musicians to play together. His first time conducting was with the Northern Sinfonia in the UK. He has been the chief conductor for the Nordic Chamber Orchestra and the Swedish Wind Ensemble. He also led the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra until 2018. From 2016 to 2021, he was the music director for the Israel Netanya Kibbutz Orchestra.

In 2011, Lindberg and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra started a big project. They aimed to record all of the symphonies by the composer Allan Pettersson. This project was finished in 2023.

Personal Life

Christian Lindberg lives in Stockholm, Sweden. He lives with his wife and their four children. His older brother, Jakob Lindberg, is also a musician who plays the lute.
