About Christian Lindberg
His Early Life and Music Journey
Christian Lindberg grew up in a place called Danderyd, Sweden. When he was younger, he first learned to play the trumpet. But at age 16, he discovered the trombone. He borrowed a trombone to join his friends' Dixieland jazz band, which is a fun, lively style of jazz music.
He studied music at the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. By the time he was 18, he was good enough to play in the Royal Swedish Opera Orchestra! But he wanted to do something different. At 20, he decided to become a full-time solo musician, meaning he would perform by himself. He continued his studies with famous trombone players like John Iveson, Ralph Sauer, and Roger Bobo.
His Professional Music Career
In 1981, Christian won a big music competition called the Nordic Soloists' Biennale. His first major concert was in 1984, where he played a special trombone piece by Henri Tomasi. In the same year, he signed a deal to record three music albums. His very first solo album was called "The Virtuoso Trombone." Since then, he has recorded over 60 albums! He has worked with many musicians, including pianist Roland Pöntinen and composer Jan Sandström.
Christian is famous for playing new and modern music. He has also helped to create many new pieces for the trombone. Over 80 new musical works have been written especially for him by different composers. In 2017, he performed his 100th new trombone concerto for the first time! One of his most famous performances was in Jan Sandström's Motorbike Concerto.
Christian also started writing his own music in the 1990s. His friend Jan Sandström encouraged him to try. His first piece was "Arabenne" for trombone and strings, recorded in 1997. He has written other pieces like "Mandrake in the Corner" and "Chick 'a' bone Checkout."
Christian even helped design a special part for the trombone called an F attachment valve rotor. He got a patent for his design in 1999, working with a company called C.G. Conn. This special valve helps the trombone make a more open and clear sound. Conn even makes trombones with his "CL2000" valve design!
In 2000, Christian started leading orchestras as a conductor. His first time conducting was with the Northern Sinfonia in the UK. He has been the main conductor for several orchestras, including the Nordic Chamber Orchestra and the Swedish Wind Ensemble. He also led the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra and the Israel Netanya Kibbutz Orchestra.
From 2011 to 2023, Christian worked with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra on a big project. They recorded all of the symphonies (long musical pieces) by a composer named Allan Pettersson.
His Family Life
Christian Lindberg lives in Stockholm, Sweden, with his wife and their four children. His older brother, Jakob Lindberg, is also a musician who plays the lute, an old string instrument.
