Christian Poncelet (born March 24, 1928 – died September 11, 2020) was an important French politician. He was a member of the UMP party. He is best known for being the President of the French Senate from 1998 to 2008. He also served as a mayor and a local council leader.

Christian Poncelet was born in Blaise, a town in the Ardennes region of France. He became a well-known figure in French politics. He was part of the conservative political movement.

Starting His Political Journey

Poncelet began his political career by being elected to the National Assembly in November 1962. The National Assembly is like one of the two main parts of the French Parliament. He represented the Vosges area. He was re-elected several times, showing people trusted him. He served as a deputy (a member of the National Assembly) until 1972.

Working in the Government

After leaving the National Assembly, Christian Poncelet joined the French government. He held several important roles as a Secretary of State. These roles included:

On October 2, 1998, Christian Poncelet was elected as the President of the French Senate. This is a very important position, similar to the speaker of a parliament. He won the election after several rounds of voting. He served as President of the Senate for ten years.

In 2000, he received a special award called the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit. This award recognized his important work.

In September 2008, after a new Senate election, Poncelet decided not to seek another term as President. He continued to serve as a Senator. Gérard Larcher took over as the new President of the Senate.
