Becoming a Senator
On September 28, 1986, Larcher was elected as a Senator for Yvelines. He was 37 years old, making him one of the youngest Senators in France at that time.
He was re-elected as a Senator in 1995. In 1997, he became the Vice President of the Senate. Then, in 2001, he was chosen to lead the Senate's Economic Affairs Commission.

In 2007, the new President, Nicolas Sarkozy, offered Larcher a job as Minister of Agriculture. However, Larcher chose to stay in the Senate instead. He then prepared to run for President of the Senate.
Leading the Senate
On October 1, 2008, Gérard Larcher was elected as the President of the Senate. He won with 173 votes.
In September 2011, the political parties on the left side won more seats in the Senate. Because of this, a new President of the Senate was elected on October 1, 2011. Jean-Pierre Bel, a candidate from the left, became the new President.
However, after the elections in September 2014, the right-wing parties won more seats again. Larcher was once more chosen by his party to be the President of the Senate. He was re-elected to this role on October 1, 2014, and has served ever since.
