Rambouillet is a town in north-central France. It is located in the Yvelines area, which is part of the Île-de-France region. Rambouillet is about 44 kilometers (27 miles) southwest of Paris. It serves as an important administrative center for its department.

Rambouillet is known for its large Forest of Rambouillet. It is also famous for its historic castle, the Château de Rambouillet. This castle has hosted many important international meetings. Because it is close to Paris and Versailles, Rambouillet has often been a place where the French government met.

Getting Around Rambouillet

Rambouillet has a train station called Rambouillet railway station. This station is part of the SNCF network. It connects the town to Paris and Chartres through the Transilien Paris – Montparnasse suburban rail line.

Exploring Rambouillet's Landmarks

Rambouillet is home to several interesting historical sites and attractions. These places tell stories about the town's past and its connection to French history.

The Château de Rambouillet

The historic Château de Rambouillet

The Château de Rambouillet was once a medieval fortress. In 1783, King Louis XVI of France bought it as a private home. He liked it because it was in the middle of the large forest, which was great for hunting.

During the French Revolution in 1789, the castle became public property. Later, Napoleon I used it as one of his imperial homes. When the French monarchy was restored, it became a royal residence again. King Charles X of France even signed his abdication here in 1830.

Since 1896, the Château de Rambouillet has been the official summer home for the President of France. President Félix Faure was the first to choose it for this purpose. It has kept this important role ever since.

Palace of the King of Rome

The Palais du Roi de Rome is another historic building. In 1784, King Louis XVI ordered the construction of a building next to the castle gardens. This building was later restored by Napoleon I. He renamed it the "Palace of the King of Rome." It became the official home in Rambouillet for Napoleon's young son. You can find its entrance on Rue Charles de Gaulle, which is Rambouillet's main street.

Rambouillet City Hall

The Hôtel de Ville, which is the City Hall, was built in 1786. King Louis XVI asked for it to be built by the architect Jacques-Jean Thévenin. Originally, it was a building for local courts. Later, Napoleon I gave it to the people of Rambouillet to use as their City Hall. An inscription above the doors says: "Donated to the inhabitants of Rambouillet by Napoleon the Great, [in the] Year 1809."

Saint-Lubin Church

The new Saint-Lubin church was built between 1868 and 1871. Its architect was Anatole de Baudot. He was a student of the famous architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc.

National Sheepfold

The Bergerie nationale is a special farm built on the grounds of the Rambouillet Domain. King Louis XVI requested its construction. Since 1786, it has been home to the Rambouillet Merino sheep. This breed of sheep is famous for its fine wool.

The Queen's Dairy

The Laiterie de la Reine, also known as the Queen's Dairy, is next to the Bergerie nationale. It was built in 1787 for Queen Marie Antoinette, the wife of King Louis XVI. The architect Jean-Jacques Thévenin designed it.

Shell Cottage

The Chaumière des coquillages is a charming thatched-roof cottage. Its inside is decorated with shells and mother-of-pearl. It was built between 1779 and 1780 in the English garden of the Rambouillet Domain. It was made for the princesse de Lamballe.

Miniature Train Museum

The Musée Rambolitrain is a museum dedicated to miniature trains. It is located across from the Saint-Lubin church. Inside, you can find a detailed recreation of a Parisian toy store from the 1930s. It's a fun place for anyone who loves trains and models.

American Eagle Monument

The Monument Américain (The American Eagle Monument) is at the south entrance of Rambouillet. It is on the D 906 road that leads to Chartres. This monument marks the spot where seven American soldiers were killed in two attacks on August 16, 1944.

The monument was put up in 1947. It has an inscription that says: "À la mémoire des soldats américains tombés pour la libération de notre région en août 1944". This means "In memory of the American soldiers fallen for the liberation of our region in August 1944." The names of nine American soldiers are on a plaque there. Every year on August 19, ceremonies are held at the monument to remember them.
