Christian Sands (born May 22, 1989) is an American jazz pianist and composer. He creates amazing music and has even been nominated for a Grammy Award! His album Be Water, released in 2020, was recognized for its song "Be Water II".
Life and Music Journey
Christian Sands was born on May 22, 1989. He grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, and later moved to Orange. Christian started playing the piano when he was very young, taking lessons from age four. He once said that music was always a huge part of his life, from home to school and even on stage.
A famous pianist named Billy Taylor helped Christian a lot when he was a teenager. Billy Taylor even let Christian finish one of his own concerts at the Kennedy Center! After that, Christian went to study music at the Manhattan School of Music. While there, he played with the school's Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra. Their album, Kenya Revisited Live, was nominated for a Latin Grammy in 2009.
After finishing school, Christian joined a band called Inside Straight, led by the famous bassist Christian McBride. They traveled all over the world, playing their music.
In 2012, Christian Sands became a Steinway artist. This means he is recognized for his talent and plays Steinway pianos. In 2014, Christian shared that musicians like Christian McBride, Wynton Marsalis, and Kenny Garrett inspired him. He admired how they honored traditional music while also creating new sounds. That same year, Christian was a finalist for the American Pianists Association Jazz Fellowship Awards.
His song "Be Water II" was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2020. This was a big honor for his musical composition.
