Christine Maria Kaufmann (born January 11, 1945 – died March 28, 2017) was a talented German-Austrian actress, writer, and businesswoman. She was born to a German father and a French mother. Christine became famous for her acting and even won a special award called the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year – Actress in 1961 for her role in the movie Town Without Pity. She was the first German actress to receive such an honor.
Christine Kaufmann's Life and Career
Christine Kaufmann was born in Lengdorf, a small town in Styria, Austria. Her mother, Geneviève Kaufmann, was a make-up artist from France, and her father, Johannes Kaufmann, was an engineer.
Growing up in Munich, Germany, Christine started her artistic journey as a ballerina at the Munich Opera. She began acting in movies when she was just seven years old. Her first film was The White Horse Inn in 1952. She quickly gained attention for her role in Rose-Girl Resli in 1954.
Christine became known around the world when she starred in The Last Days of Pompeii (1959) with Steve Reeves. She also acted alongside famous actor Kirk Douglas in Town Without Pity (1961). The next year, she appeared in Escape from East Berlin and worked with Tony Curtis in Taras Bulba. Tony Curtis later became her husband.
After taking a break from acting during her marriage, Christine returned to films. She had important roles in movies directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, such as Lili Marleen and Lola. She also often worked with German director Helmut Dietl on TV shows like Monaco Franze.
In 1987, Christine played a cool tattoo artist in the popular movie Bagdad Cafe. This was a unique comedy set in a desert motel. Her very last movie role was as Aunt Polly in the American film Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn (2014).
Later in her life, Christine Kaufmann also became a very successful businesswoman. She created her own line of beauty products, which were very popular in Germany. Many people called her the "most beautiful grandmother in Germany" as she got older. She also wrote several books about beauty and health, and two books about her own life.
Christine Kaufmann's Family Life
In 1963, when she was 18, Christine married her co-star from Taras Bulba, Tony Curtis. They had two daughters named Alexandra and Allegra Curtis. They later divorced in 1968. Christine married three more times during her life.
Christine loved to travel and often moved to different places. She was also very good at languages, speaking German, English, and French.
Christine Kaufmann passed away in Munich on March 28, 2017, at the age of 72. She had been diagnosed with an illness only a few days before.
