Christine McGlade's Career Highlights
Christine McGlade is most famous for being the host of the well-known kids' comedy show, You Can't Do That on Television. This show was very popular in Canada on the CTV Television Network and in the United States on Nickelodeon. She was part of the show from its very beginning in 1979, when it was a local show in Ottawa, Ontario. She stayed with the show until partway through the 1986 season. In 1985 and 1986, Alasdair Gillis was her co-host. Christine also hosted Whatever Turns You On, a short spin-off show that aired in 1979.
For nine years, Christine was the Director of Interactive at TVOntario, a public educational TV network in Ontario. In this role, she led the creation of many successful digital projects. These included Inside Disaster, Chocolocate, and Green Heroes.
She also worked on important social issues. She was the Director of Interactive for getinvolved.ca, which is Canada's largest volunteer network.
Today, Christine is a senior partner at a company called Analytical Engine Interactive Inc. This company helps businesses with digital strategy. She also teaches at several colleges and universities. She teaches subjects like digital strategy, data analysis, and design at OCAD University, Humber College, Centennial College, and Sheridan College.
Hosting You Can't Do That on Television
Christine McGlade joined You Can't Do That on Television almost by accident. In 1978, the show's creator, Roger Price, held auditions. Christine went along to support a friend who was auditioning. She didn't plan to act or be in show business herself. However, Roger Price insisted she either audition or leave. Christine decided to audition and was chosen for the show, even though her friend was not.
In the early years (1979 and 1981), the show was live and an hour long. Christine often introduced live contests and music videos. Later, the show became a half-hour comedy program. Christine then became the main character in many of the episodes' stories.
She also hosted Whatever Turns You On in 1979. This was a shorter version of You Can't Do That on Television made for the whole CTV network. In 1982, she hosted Something Else, another spin-off. This show included the live and musical parts that were no longer in YCDTOTV.
Christine's nickname on the show was "Moose." This was also her real-life nickname. She got the name from a classmate in sixth grade. The classmate thought she was like the character "Moose" from the Archie comics. When Christine told Roger Price about this, he decided to use it in the show. So, millions of viewers knew her as "Moose." Even though she sometimes joked about the nickname, it stuck with her throughout her time on the show.
Christine was one of the longest-serving cast members on YCDTOTV. She appeared in 91 episodes and hosted 89 of them. Only Les Lye and Abby Hagyard appeared in more episodes. Her last episode was "Garbage" in the 1986 season. After she left, Alasdair Gillis became the main host for the rest of that season.
Other Acting Roles
After leaving YCDTOTV, Christine starred in Turkey Television. This was another comedy show on Nickelodeon created by Roger Price. She acted in the show and also worked as an assistant producer.
In 1983, she hosted a show called Let Me Prove It. This show later aired again on YTV between 1988 and 1991.
In the early 2000s, while working at YTV, she sometimes played a character called "The Wart" in short TV segments.
