The Christmas Lights Trail is a super fun event that happens every year in Perth, Western Australia. The City of Perth puts up amazing light displays and cool projections. You can see them all around the main city area, also known as the CBD. These lights shine brightly from 6 PM to 11 PM every night. The trail usually starts in late November and lasts until late December or early January.

What is the Christmas Lights Trail?

How it Started

The Christmas Lights Trail began in 2017. That first year, there were 16 different light displays. You could find them around the Perth city centre and in Northbridge.

This new event took the place of an older tradition. For 18 years, Perth had a big Christmas tree lighting ceremony. But too many people gathered in Forrest Place for it. This caused safety worries because of the huge crowds. The Christmas Lights Trail was a much better idea. It spreads out the visitors across many different locations. This makes it safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Growing Bigger Each Year

The Christmas Lights Trail has grown a lot since it started!

  • In 2018, there were 18 light displays to explore.
  • By 2019, the trail had grown to 27 displays. A new, smaller trail was added in Claisebrook Cove in East Perth. About 333,000 people visited the City of Perth to see the lights that year!
  • In 2020, another new trail was added in West Perth. This brought the total number of displays to 30.

Popular Light Displays

Some of the most popular and exciting light displays on the trail include:

  • "Christmas Projections" – This display features cool animated pictures. They are projected onto the outside of St George's Cathedral.
  • "Council House Kangaroos" – You can see seven fun kangaroo figures on the lawn. They are located outside Council House.
  • "Constellation Tunnel" – This is a really long tunnel, about 32 metres (105 feet) in length. It's filled with lights and can be found in Yagan Square.
