Christopher Columbus Upson (October 17, 1829 – February 8, 1902) was an important figure in American history. He was a lawyer and served as a U.S. Representative for the state of Texas. This means he was elected by people in Texas to represent them in the United States government.
Early Life and Moving to Texas
Christopher Upson was born in 1829 near Syracuse, New York. He went to local schools and later attended Williams College in Massachusetts. After his studies, he decided to become a lawyer.
He finished his law studies and was allowed to practice law in 1851. He started his law career in Syracuse, New York. A few years later, in 1854, he moved to San Antonio, Texas. There, he continued to work as a lawyer.
During the Civil War
The American Civil War was a very difficult time in American history. During this war, Christopher Upson served as a volunteer. He was a colonel, which is a high rank, on the staff of General W.H.C. Whiting. He served with the Confederate States Army. In 1862, he was also chosen by the Confederacy to be a judge in Arizona.
Serving in Congress
After the Civil War, Christopher Upson continued his public service. He was elected as a Democrat to the United States Congress. He filled a spot that became open when another representative, Gustave Schleicher, passed away.
He served in the Forty-sixth Congress and was reelected to the Forty-seventh Congress. His time in Congress lasted from April 15, 1879, to March 3, 1883. When it was time for another election in 1882, he tried to be reelected but was not successful.
Later Life
After his time in Congress, Christopher Upson went back to practicing law in San Antonio, Texas. He continued to live and work there until he passed away on February 8, 1902. He was buried in San Antonio City Cemetery No. 1.
