Christopher Downs, born on November 5, 1974, is an American boxer. He is known for winning a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games. He was also a member of the U.S. Army's special athlete program.
Christopher Downs' Boxing Journey
Christopher Downs joined the U.S. Army's World Class Athlete Program. He started boxing in 2003, which was a bit later than most boxers. His training was paused when he served in Iraq. He was there from January 2004 to March 2005.
Downs believes that seeing friends put their lives on the line changes your view. It can make you brave enough to try new things. Even though he was still in the military, he was allowed to focus on his boxing training.
Championships and Medals
Christopher Downs is known for his aggressive punching style. In 2005, he reached the semifinal round of a competition. He then became the US light-heavyweight champion in both 2006 and 2007.
He earned a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan American Games. He competed against Yusiel Napoles from Cuba in that event.
At the World Championships in 2007, he had a big win against Ismail Sillakh from Ukraine. However, he later lost to Tony Jeffries from Great Britain.
Downs also competed in Olympic qualifying events. He defeated Julio de la Cruz, a Cuban champion, in one qualifier. He later lost to Luis Gonzalez from Venezuela. In another qualifier, Julio Castillo eliminated him from the competition.
