Christopher James Priest (born James Christopher Owsley on June 30, 1961) is a famous American comic book writer. He is sometimes known simply as Priest. He legally changed his name around 1993. He made history as the first Black writer and editor in mainstream comic books.

Priest's Journey in Comics
Christopher Priest, who was known as Jim Owsley back then, started his career in comics in 1978. He began as an intern at Marvel Comics. In 1979, he joined Marvel's team as an editor. He became the first African American editor in the mainstream comic book world. He worked on Crazy Magazine and later helped edit the Conan comic titles.
Becoming a Comic Book Writer
Jim Owsley started writing comics professionally in 1983. His first work was for The Falcon miniseries. From 1985 to 1986, he became the main editor for the Spider-Man comic books. He later left Marvel Comics. His time writing Power Man and Iron Fist ended with a big story where Iron Fist died.
Working at DC Comics
After Marvel, Owsley moved to DC Comics. He wrote for Green Lantern from 1988 to 1989. He worked with artists like Gil Kane and Tod Smith. He also wrote two Green Lantern Special comics. Later, he helped edit several titles for DC Comics' Impact Comics from 1991 to 1993.
As a writer, Owsley, now known as Priest, worked on many popular series. These include Deadpool and Black Panther. He also helped create new comic series like Quantum and Woody and Static.
Milestone Media and Name Change
In 1993, Priest joined a group of writers and artists to start Milestone Media. This was a comic book publisher connected with DC Comics. He helped create characters for Milestone, including Static.
Soon after, he changed his name from "Jim Owsley" to "Christopher Priest." He had introduced a character named Priest in his Green Lantern comics before his own name change. He uses "Priest" or "Christopher J. Priest" professionally.
Returning to Comics
After taking a break from comics for ten years, Priest came back in 2014–2015. He wrote a Quantum and Woody miniseries. In 2016, he was chosen to write the Deathstroke series for DC Rebirth. He also wrote for Justice League in 2017. More recently, in 2019, he started writing Vampirella for Dynamite Comics and U.S.Agent for Marvel Comics.
Priest's Music Career
Christopher Priest is also a talented musician. He is a singer-songwriter and plays many instruments. He has written and produced many songs for himself and other artists.
His first solo album was called Streetwise. He released it in 1981 under the name "Hollis Stone." The album cover showed him in front of the Marvel Comics office building. In 1993, Priest helped produce a live concert album for a choir. He even played bass guitar on some of the songs.
Personal Life
Priest is an ordained Baptist minister. This means he is a religious leader. He has a website where he shares his thoughts on Christian topics. Priest lives in Denver, Colorado.
