Chromium(III) chloride facts for kids
Chromium(III) chloride is a special chemical compound. It is made from the metal chromium and chloride (which comes from chlorine). In this compound, chromium has a specific electrical charge, which scientists call its +3 oxidation state.
This chemical can look different depending on whether it has water attached to it. When it has water molecules, it's called "hydrated" and looks green. But when it doesn't have water, it's called "anhydrous" and appears purple.
You can make chromium(III) chloride in a few ways. One way is to mix chromium metal with a strong acid called hydrochloric acid. Another way is to dissolve chromium(III) oxide (another chromium chemical) in hydrochloric acid.
It's important to know that chromium can have different electrical charges. Chromium with a +3 charge, like in chromium(III) chloride, is much safer than chromium with a +6 charge. Some chromium chemicals with a +6 charge, like chromates, can be harmful.
