The Chu River (also called Shu) is a long river in Central Asia. It flows through northern Kyrgyzstan and southern Kazakhstan. The Chu River is about 1,067 kilometers (663 miles) long, making it one of the longest rivers in this part of the world. Central Asia is a "landlocked" region, which means it has no direct connection to an ocean.

Where Does the Chu River Flow?
The Chu River starts in the high Tian Shan mountains in Kyrgyzstan. It then flows through beautiful valleys and gorges. One famous place it passes through is the Boom Gorge, a narrow and rocky canyon. The river eventually reaches the dry steppes of Kazakhstan. It doesn't flow into a sea or ocean. Instead, it ends in a desert area, where its water is used up by farms and evaporates.

The Dungan people have a unique culture that mixes Chinese and Central Asian traditions.
You can find historical sites in the Chüy Valley, like the Burana Tower. This ancient tower is what's left of a large city that existed many centuries ago. Near Burana Tower, you can also see old stone statues called balbals. These statues were made by ancient nomadic people and are like memorials.

Today, the Chu River continues to be a vital source of water for farming and for people living in the region. It supports agriculture, which is very important for the economy of both Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The river also helps define part of the border between these two countries.
