Chukovezer Island is a small, rocky island located near the huge continent of Antarctica. It is part of the Palmer Archipelago, a group of islands off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. This island is about 700 meters (that's almost half a mile) away from the northwest coast of Anvers Island.
Chukovezer Island stretches for about 1.22 kilometers (or 0.76 miles) from its southeast to its northwest side. It is also about 460 meters (0.29 miles) wide. No one lives on the island, as is common for many places in Antarctica.
Where is Chukovezer Island?
Chukovezer Island is found at specific global coordinates: 64 degrees, 39 minutes, 6 seconds South, and 64 degrees, 14 minutes, 42 seconds West. These numbers help scientists and explorers pinpoint its exact spot on a map.
The island is located about 7.22 kilometers (4.49 miles) north-northeast of a place called Cape Monaco. It is also around 6.8 kilometers (4.2 miles) south of Gerlache Point. British explorers created maps of this area in 1974, helping us to know its exact location.
What's in a Name?
Chukovezer Island gets its name from a settlement called Chukovezer in Western Bulgaria. Many places in Antarctica are named after towns, people, or features from different countries around the world. This helps to honor the international efforts in exploring and studying the Antarctic region.
