The Santa María Magdalena de Zamora is an old church found in Zamora, Spain. It's a beautiful example of Romanesque style, which was popular in Europe a long time ago.

A Look Inside and Out

This church was built in the 12th century, which means it's over 800 years old! It was originally built for the Knights Templar, a famous group of warrior monks from the Middle Ages. After their group was no longer active, the church was given to the Order of Malta, another old and important group.

Outside the Church

When you look at the outside of the church, you'll notice the main entrance on the south side. It has many circular arches and columns, all decorated with amazing Romanesque artwork. Look up, and you'll see a special round window called a rose window. It's made with small columns and looks a bit like the one at the Temple Church in London.

Inside the Church

Inside the church, you can find old tombs from the 13th century. These tombs have special canopies (like small roofs) supported by twisted and grooved columns. Against the north wall, there's a tomb under a canopy with three columns. The tomb itself is simple, with a cross carved into it. The carving of the person buried there looks like they are lying on a bed, and it's built right into the wall. Above this, you can see a carving of a head with wings, which represents the soul, supported by angels.

Protecting History

The Santa María Magdalena de Zamora church is very important. It has been given a special status called Bien de Interés Cultural in Spain. This means it's a protected historical site, and it has been kept safe since 1910.
