The Church of Santiago (also known as Santiago el mayor) is a Roman Catholic church located in the town of Sariego, in the region of Asturias, Spain. It is a very old building with a long history.

A Look at Its History

This church was first built a very long time ago, in the 10th century. That's over 1000 years ago!

Old Architectural Style

The Church of Santiago has special windows that look like those found in other very old churches, such as the Church of San Salvador de Valdediós. These windows are from a style called pre-Romanesque. This means they were built before the Romanesque style became popular. In Asturias, this early style was common between the years 711 and 910, during the time of the kingdom of Asturias.

Changes Over Time

Over the centuries, the church has been updated. It was given a new look and repaired in the 15th or 16th centuries. This means parts of it were changed or added between the years 1400 and 1600.

Later, the church faced a difficult time. It was damaged during the Spanish Civil War and then carefully rebuilt. This shows how important the church is to the community, as they worked to restore it.
