The Church of St Catherine is a historic Anglican church located in St Catherine, a small village in Somerset, England. This church was first built in the 12th century, which means it's over 800 years old! It was originally a "chapel of ease," a smaller church built for people who lived too far from a main parish church. Today, it is recognized as a Grade II* listed building, meaning it's a very important historical site.

History of the Church

The land where St Catherine's Church stands used to belong to the Prior Cantlow of Bath Abbey during the medieval period. A "Prior" was a leader in a monastery, similar to a boss.

Early Construction and Changes

The church was first built in the 12th century. Around the year 1490, Prior Cantlow made many changes to the church, giving it a new look. The tall church tower was added a bit later, in 1503. Over the centuries, the church has been updated several times. More changes happened in 1704, 1846, and 1880, helping to keep the old building in good shape.

Inside the Church

When you go inside the Church of St Catherine, you can see some very old and interesting features. There is a "font" from the 12th century. A font is a special basin used for baptisms, which are ceremonies where people are welcomed into the Christian church. You can also see a "pulpit" from the 15th century. A pulpit is a raised platform where a priest or minister stands to give a sermon or talk.

Location and Parish

The Church of St Catherine is located within the beautiful grounds of St Catherine's Court. This court is a large, historic house that was built in the 16th century. St Catherine's Court is also a very important historical building, listed as Grade I.

The church is part of a larger church area called the "benefice" of Batheaston. This means it works together with the church in Batheaston. The Church of St Catherine has been connected to this larger church area since 1258.
