The Church of St. James the Great is an Anglican church located in Lower Gornal, a part of Sedgley in the West Midlands, England. It received this special status on March 11, 1996. The church is part of the Anglican Diocese of Worcester.
Building the Church
The construction of the Church of St. James the Great began in 1815. It was finished in 1817, but people started using it for services in 1823. The church was designed by an architect named Thomas Lee. It was built using local yellow stone, which is called Gornal stone. The roofs were made with slate and tiles.
Changes Over Time
The church has been updated and expanded several times since it was first built. In 1837, the church was made larger. They added porches on both the north and south sides. Later, in 1849, the inside of the church was refitted. A new part called a chancel was added. A chancel is the area around the altar, usually at the east end of the church.
The chancel was rebuilt again in 1899, and an organ was also added at that time. In 1930, the very top part of the church tower was rebuilt. A beautiful window on the north side of the apse was created by Ninian Comper in 1902. The apse is a rounded part of the church, often at the end of the chancel.
Don't Get Confused!
It's important not to mix up this church with another one nearby. There is a different St James's Church at Eve Hill in Dudley. That church is about two miles away from the Church of St. James the Great in Lower Gornal.
