The Church of St. Mary is a very old and important church in the village of Worsbrough, which is in South Yorkshire, England. It's a Church of England church, meaning it's part of the main Christian church in England. This special building is considered a Grade I listed site. This means it's a building of exceptional historical interest.
The church was first built in the 12th century, which is over 800 years ago! However, some older stones suggest there might have been an even earlier building on this spot.
A Long History
The Church of St. Mary has been around for many centuries. It has seen lots of changes and additions over time.
Building Through the Ages
The oldest parts of the church, like some sections of the chancel (the area around the altar), were built during the early Norman period. This was soon after the Normans came to England.
Later, in the 14th and 15th centuries, the church was changed and improved. One important addition was the south door. It has a special Gothic inscription that dates back to the year 1480. Gothic style is known for its pointed arches and detailed carvings.
Remembering the Past
The churchyard of St. Mary's holds a sad but important part of local history. In 1849, a terrible accident happened at the Darley Main Colliery, a local coal mine. Seventy-five miners lost their lives. They are buried together in a mass grave in the churchyard. This grave helps the community remember these miners and the dangers of their work long ago.
