A Look at the Church's History
The Church of St Mary-the-Virgin has a long and interesting past. Some parts of its oldest section, the west wall of the nave, might have been built way back in the middle of the 12th century. The nave is the main part of the church where people sit.
Over the years, the church has been changed and updated many times. These updates are often called "restorations." Here are some of the key changes that happened, especially during the 19th and early 20th centuries:
- In 1840, a screen that separated parts of the church was removed.
- The chancel, which is the area near the altar, was replaced in 1890. At the same time, the nave and the south aisle were made longer towards the east. An aisle is a walkway along the side of the church.
- More parts were added in 1909, including the north aisle and vestries. Vestries are rooms where clergy prepare for services.
- A special area called the Holy Trinity Chapel was built in 1910.
- Finally, in 1921, a baptistry was added. This is a place used for baptisms, a Christian ceremony.
