History of the Church

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is very old, dating back to the Middle Ages. Over time, it has been updated and changed.

Victorian Changes

Between 1873 and 1874, the church had a big makeover. This was during the Victorian era. Two famous architects, George Frederick Bodley and Thomas Garner, led this work. They made many improvements to the church's design.

Tower and Stained Glass

Later, in 1906, the church's tower was rebuilt. This project was overseen by Percy Heylyn Currey. The beautiful stained glass windows in the east part of the church are thought to be made by a company called Burlison and Grylls. These windows often tell stories from the Bible using colorful glass.

Church Clocks

The church has had clocks for a very long time. An early clock was installed in 1686 by a clockmaker named Richard Roe. This old clock was later replaced in 1889 with a newer one.
