The Church of St Nicholas in Dinnington, Somerset, England, is a very old and special church. It was mostly built in the 15th century, which means it's over 500 years old! It's officially recognised as a Grade II* listed building, meaning it's an important historical site that needs to be protected.

A Look Back in Time: The Church's History

Imagine a church standing in Dinnington village since at least 1207! That's when we first hear about a church being here. The building you see today was mostly built in the 15th century, which was a long time ago, around the 1400s.

Later, in 1863, the church got a big makeover. This is called a Victorian restoration because it happened during the Victorian era. During this time, some parts were changed, like removing a gallery (a kind of balcony inside the church).

Long ago, this church wasn't a main church on its own. It was like a smaller church, or a chapelry, connected to a bigger church in Seavington St Mary. Today, it's part of a group of churches called a benefice, which includes churches in Merriott, Hinton, Dinnington, and Lopen. They all work together under the Diocese of Bath and Wells.

What Does the Church Look Like?

The Church of St Nicholas is built from a special local stone called hamstone. It has slate roofs and a small tower on the very top of the roof, called a bell turret, where a bell might have been.

Inside, the church has two main sections: the chancel and the nave. The chancel is the part of the church near the altar, and the nave is the main area where people sit during services.

While many of the things inside the church, like the benches and decorations, are from the 19th century (when it was restored), there's one very old and interesting piece. It's a stone font from the 13th century, which is even older than most of the church building! It has been re-carved over time, but it's still a piece of history from over 800 years ago.
