The Church of St Nicholas and St Faith is a special church in Saltash, Cornwall, in England. It's part of the Church of England, which is the main Christian church in England. This church is very old and important. It's known as a grade I listed building, which means it's protected because of its history and amazing architecture.

A Look Back in Time: The Church's History

The oldest parts of the Church of St Nicholas and St Faith were built a very long time ago. This was during the Norman period, around the 11th and 12th centuries. The church was later updated and changed in the 14th and 15th centuries. These changes made it even more interesting to look at.

The church is built from strong, rough stones called rubble. It has a roof made of slate, which is a type of dark grey rock. The church has a main area called a nave. It also has a long section on the north side called an aisle, with five main parts or "bays." There's a small entrance area, or porch, on the south side. You'll also find a tower on the north side!

For about 700 years, this church wasn't a main church on its own. It was a "chapel-of-ease." This means it was a smaller church that helped people who lived far from the main Church of St Stephen, Saltash. It made it easier for them to attend church services.

In 1881, something big happened. An important group called the Privy Council made a special decision. They ordered that the chapel should become a Parish Church all by itself. So, what was once known as St Nicholas' Chapel became the Parish Church of St Nicholas and St Faith.

Because of its historical importance, the church received a special designation. On January 17, 1952, it was officially named a grade I listed building. This is the highest level of protection for historic buildings in England.

The Church Today

The Church of St Nicholas and St Faith is still an active and important place of worship. It is part of a larger group called the Benefice of Saltash. This group also includes the Church of St Stephen, Saltash.
