The Church of St Peter is an old church in the village of Freshford, England. It was built a very long time ago, in the 1400s! This church is a special place because it's a Grade II* listed building. This means it's an important historic building that is protected by law.

History of St Peter's Church

The Church of St Peter is located on the north side of Freshford village. Some parts of the church are from the 1400s. Imagine, that's over 500 years ago!

The Church Tower

A tall tower was added to the church in 1514. This tower has three main sections. It is supported by strong diagonal structures called buttresses. Buttresses are like big, stone props that help the walls stand firm and keep the tower from falling over.

Victorian Changes

Later, in the 1800s, the church got some updates. This period is called the Victorian era. The church was "restored," which means it was repaired and improved. A person named Charles Edward Davis helped with these changes.

Churchyard and Tombs

Outside the church, in the churchyard, you can find many old stone tombs. These are called "Georgian chest tombs." They are from the late 1700s and early 1800s. Four of these tombs are so old and special that they are also protected as listed buildings.

Church Community

The Church of St Peter is part of a larger group of churches called a parish. This parish includes Freshford, along with nearby villages like Limpley Stoke and Hinton Charterhouse. All these churches are part of the Diocese of Bath and Wells, which is a big area managed by the Church of England.
