The Church of St Thomas of Canterbury in Lovington, Somerset, England, is a very old and special church. It was built way back in the 13th century, which means it's over 700 years old! This church is so important that it's listed as a Grade II* listed building. This means it's a building of special national interest.

A Look Back in Time

This church was first built in the 1200s. Imagine how different the world was then! Over many centuries, the church has seen a lot of history. In 1861, it had a big makeover, which is called a Victorian restoration. This means parts of the church were repaired or updated to look like they did in Victorian times.

Today, the church is part of a group of churches called the Six Pilgrims benefice. This group belongs to the Diocese of Bath and Wells, which is a larger area managed by the Church of England.

What the Church Looks Like

The Church of St Thomas of Canterbury is made from stone. It has special Doulting stone details and roofs made of slate or clay tiles.

Inside the Church

The church has a main area called the nave, which has three sections or "bays." There's also a chancel, which is the part of the church where the altar is, and a north aisle, which is like a walkway.

The Tower and Bells

The church has a tall tower with three levels. The tower is supported by strong structures called buttresses. Inside the tower, there are three bells. These bells are very old, with some dating back to the 15th century (the 1400s) and others from the 17th century (the 1600s)!

Old Features Still Standing

Most of the things you see inside the church today, like the benches and decorations, were added in the 1800s. However, some parts are much older. You can still see original door arches, a piscina (a basin used for washing sacred vessels), and an ambry (a small cupboard for storing holy items). These pieces have been there since the church was first built!

The Churchyard

Outside the church, in the churchyard, there's an old chest tomb. This tomb dates back to the early 17th century and belongs to the Danyell family.
