The Church of the Holy Family is an old and important Roman Catholic church building in Eveleth, Minnesota, United States. It was built in 1909 by a group of people called Slovene Americans. These were people from Slovenia (a country in Europe) who had moved to America. For about 70 years, this church was a very important place for their community.
In 1980, the building was added to a special list called the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places that are important to the history of the United States. The Church of the Holy Family was chosen because it played a big role in the religious and social life of Eveleth. It was a central gathering spot for one of Eveleth's main groups of people.
Later, in the late 1900s, the three main Roman Catholic churches in Eveleth joined together. First, in 1968, St. Patrick's church (which was mostly for Irish families) joined with Holy Family. Then, ten years later, Immaculate Conception church (which was mostly for Italian families) also joined. After these churches came together, the Church of the Holy Family was given a new name: Resurrection Church.
The Church's History
The Church of the Holy Family was built in 1909. It was designed in a style called Gothic Revival. This style often includes tall, pointed arches and detailed stonework, making buildings look grand and historic. The architect who designed it was A.F. Wasielewski.
A Community Hub
For many years, the Church of the Holy Family was more than just a place for religious services. It was a central part of life for the Slovene American community in Eveleth. People gathered there for important events, celebrations, and to support each other. It helped keep their culture and traditions alive in their new home.
Joining Together
As time went on, the different church communities in Eveleth decided to unite. This happened in two main steps. In 1968, the St. Patrick's church community joined with the Holy Family congregation. Then, in 1978, the Immaculate Conception church community also became part of the Holy Family. After these mergers, the church was renamed Resurrection Church, bringing together people from different backgrounds into one larger community.
