The Church of the Holy Transfiguration of Christ on the Mount is a small, special church located near the top of Meads Mountain in Woodstock, New York. It was built by hand around 1891 by George Mead, his son William Mead, and William's wife, Anna Della Mead. This wooden church is a peaceful place where people gather for worship.

What is the Church of the Holy Transfiguration?

This church is a unique place of worship. It follows a special Christian tradition called the Western Orthodox, which is a branch of Catholicism. Services are held every Sunday morning. People who visit might also hear about a special statue of Mary that is said to have cried.

A Welcoming Place for Everyone

In the 1960s, a kind priest named Father Francis led the church. He was known as the "hippie priest" because he welcomed many young people, often called "hippies," who came to Woodstock during that time. These years were famous for big gatherings, including a well-known music festival. Father Francis helped people learn about a different way of practicing Catholicism. This branch of the faith respects the Pope as an important spiritual leader on Earth. However, unlike some other Catholic groups, it does not believe the Pope is always right or has the highest power in every decision.

A Historic Landmark

The Church of the Holy Transfiguration of Christ on the Mount is considered a very important building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 9, 2005. This means it is recognized as a place that is important to the history of the United States. A lot of this recognition happened because of the hard work of Father Deacon John Nelson. He was a student of Father Francis and worked hard to take care of the church for many years. Father John passed away on August 1, 2017. His remains were buried next to the church after a traditional service.
