History of the Church
Ely was once a small village. It became part of the larger St Mary the Virgin parish in 1869. Before the Church of the Resurrection was built, there were other smaller churches serving the area.
Early Churches in Ely
- St David's Mission Church: In 1871, a small church called St David's was built. It helped serve the people of Ely.
- The Tin Tabernacle: In the early 1900s, another church was set up. It was a "tin tabernacle," which is a church building made from corrugated iron. It was a simple, quick way to build a church.
Building the New Church
By 1933, people wanted a bigger, new church for everyone in Ely. The idea was to replace both St David's and the tin tabernacle. The first plans were for a church that could hold 500 people.
However, a very generous person named Lord Glanely wanted to do something special. He decided to give a new, grander church to the community. It was a gift in memory of his wife. This new design was by an architect named Thomas Roderick. It could seat 600 people.
The Church of the Resurrection was built where the old tin tabernacle stood. It was designed in a special style called Neo-Byzantine. This style uses ideas from old Byzantine architecture, which often features domes and grand designs. The church was officially opened in October 1934.
Special Features
Inside the church, the apse (a curved part at the end of the church) has five beautiful stained glass windows. These windows were created by an artist named Francis Spear and were put in place in 1947.
The Church Today
Even after the Church of the Resurrection was built, St David's continued to be used for services. Over time, the area grew, and another church, St Timothy's, was built in 1957.
Today, the Church of the Resurrection is part of the West Cardiff Ministry Area. This means it works together with other local churches. St Timothy's Church closed in February 2023. You can find more information about the Church of the Resurrection on its website, www.theresely.org.
What "Listed" Means
