The Ciénagas del Catatumbo National Park (also known as Catatumbo Marshes National Park or Ciénagas de Juan Manuel National Park) is a special protected area in Venezuela. It's a place where nature is kept safe and healthy.

This park is the second natural park found in the Zulia state. It includes a part of the Catatumbo moist forests, which are a type of rich, wet forest.

Welcome to Catatumbo Marshes National Park!

This amazing park is located on a wide, flat plain. This plain sits between the Serranía del Perija mountains and the large Maracaibo Lake. The weather here is usually warm, with temperatures ranging from 22 to 32 degrees Celsius. It's also very humid, meaning the air has a lot of moisture.

The Mysterious Catatumbo Lightning

The Catatumbo Marshes National Park is famous for a very unusual natural event. It's known for a strange electrical show in the sky! This area experiences incredibly frequent lightning strikes. What's even more unique is that these lightning flashes often happen without any thunder. It's like a silent light show in the clouds! Scientists are still studying why this happens so often here.

Exploring the Park's Landscape

The park is mostly a huge swampy area. It covers a wide boggy territory where the Catatumbo River flows into Maracaibo Lake. There are no tall mountains or big hills in the park. It's mostly flat and wet.

The park is also known by other names in Venezuela. Some people call it Aguas Blancas (White Waters) and Aguas Negras (Black Waters). Others know it as Ciénagas de Juan Manuel. Near the park, there's a river port called Foundados. This port is an important place for moving goods and people around Maracaibo Lake and southwestern Venezuela.
