Cian Hughton's Football Journey
Starting at Tottenham Hotspur
Cian Hughton joined the Tottenham Hotspur academy in 2005. He played 15 games for the youth team in his first season. The next season, he played 27 more games and scored one goal. He also started playing for the reserve team, where he appeared in 21 matches over two seasons.
Playing for Lincoln City
On July 27, 2009, Cian signed a six-month contract with Football League Two club Lincoln City. He played his first game for the team on August 8, when Lincoln City won 1–0 against Barnet.
After his first contract ended, he was given a new 18-month deal. However, it became harder for him to play regularly after a new manager, Steve Tilson, took over. In May 2011, he was not offered another contract. This happened after many players left the club because Lincoln City was relegated from the Football League.
After leaving Lincoln City, Cian tried out for other clubs. In June 2011, he had a ten-day trial with Vancouver Whitecaps in the MLS, but he did not get a contract. He also had trials with smaller clubs like Bristol Rovers and Milton Keynes Dons. He even scored a goal for Milton Keynes Dons in a friendly game. During the summer of 2011, Cian went to Ireland and almost signed with Dundalk. However, budget cuts at the club meant the deal could not happen.
Time at Birmingham City
Cian spent several months training with Birmingham City. His father became the manager there in June 2011. On February 29, 2012, Cian signed with Birmingham City until the end of the season. He was a substitute in one game against Brighton & Hove Albion, but he did not play in any first-team matches. When his contract ended, he left the club.
International Football
Cian Hughton was called up many times to play for the Republic of Ireland under-18 and under-19 teams. He made his debut for the under-21 team on October 9, 2009. He came on as a substitute against Georgia under-21 at Tallaght Stadium. Four days later, he started his first game for the under-21 team against Switzerland under-21 at the Waterford Regional Sports Centre.
