History of the City

Catedral San Eugenio Ciego de Avila
St. Eugene (San Eugenio) Cathedral

The city of Ciego de Ávila was started around 1840. Back then, only 263 people lived there. In 1877, it got its own local government. This made it independent from the nearby city of Morón.

Ciego de Ávila became more important during the Ten Years' War (1868–1878). This was Cuba's first war for independence from Spain. The Spanish army built a strong line of forts and trenches. This line was called the Trocha de Júcaro a Morón. They hoped it would stop Cuban rebel forces from moving to the western part of the island. However, the famous General Máximo Gómez and his soldiers managed to get past it.

Many old Spanish buildings in Ciego de Ávila were built during this time. For example, the Teatro Principal was commissioned by Angela Hernández. She was a wealthy person who wanted to bring more culture to her hometown.
